Memorabilia

In the rest of the shop you can treat your ears, but here is where you can treat your eyes for a lot less money than going to the opticians.

Mr South has put in many hours slogging and squelching around Grunty Fen in order to bring to you as much information as he can before he loses his sanity. He's managed to get three books out so far and is hard at work on a fourth. And they're only £4.99 plus p&P, so you can't really moan, can you?

We suggest that people new to Grunty Fen start with The Authorised Guide to Grunty Fen (see further down) to break themselves in gently.

Mr South's latest book, The Customs and Folklore of Grunty Fen looks at some of the traditions, attitudes and behaviours of the folk of the fen.

From place names to pylons, from sport to superstition, from weddings to winnings, Mr South ranges far and wide across the fen in search of potentially sometimes reliable information, answering such questions as: Why do brides like cat mange? Did the dead go by parcel post? Who is Miss Bucket? Do dark horses run deep? How do chimney sweeps use film-free cameras?

Always surprising, sometimes shocking, Mr South's masterpiece has stunned Cambridge University experts who, having travelled to the ends of the earth in search of the truth about human societies, now realise they have neglected the most important evidence right under their noses. Lavishly illustrated as usual, this book is a marvellous companion volume for The Authorised Guide to Grunty Fen and Who's Who in Grunty Fen.

105 glorious pages plus an introduction and a plea for help by the author.

Mr South's previous book, Who's Who in Grunty Fen, reveals the truth about the visionary men and women who made - amongst many other things - the universal shovel, the edible poultice and the gingerbread lavatory. The giants of architecture, medicine, politics, poetry, dance and ditch inspection rub shoulders with the entrepreneurs of industry, education, pharmacology and tie-knotting.

Who discovered that every week has eight days? How did goat hair have a place in the history of philosophy? Who found out why the ladies of Bastardy had such huge, flat feet? What happened to learned men when faced with a little Grunt? Who tried to harness the power of a dog's tail? Whose contribution to the war effort resulted in the knitted parachute? Find out all this and more as you enjoy the lives of these historic figures - and no prior knowledge of Grunty Fen is necessary!

Containing 93 glorious pages plus appendices and an introduction by the author, and lavishly illustrated with photographs and line drawings (many of which are quite clear and easy to understand) Who's Who in Grunty Fen is an excellent sequel to The Authorised Guide to Grunty Fen. And at about five pence per page, it's a bargain! Miss Edwards is hoping that the book does well because that means Mr South will have to write another one and she does like to keep him busy.

Mr South's first book, The Authorised Guide to Grunty Fen is, as its name suggests, the only guide book to our favourite fen. Whether it's your first time in the fen or your fiftieth, let this book ease your soggy path. Containing sections on such things as history, variable geography, currency exchange rates, night-life and health risks, the guide includes illustrations by the world-renowned artist Mr John Holder (Gent.), who has created some fabulous drawings of Dennis, Mr South and the various aspects of life in Grunty Fen. He's also the man responsible for the map.

Trust us when we tell you that if you don't buy anything else from Dennis's Memorabilia department, buy a map. It is a thing of beauty and artistry in cream and black. The detail on it is incredible and it's the best fiver's worth of art you'll ever get. You can see parts of it as the backdrop to this page and the cover of The Authorised Guide to Grunty Fen; we had to darken it down for the shop but in reality it's much more the sort of cream colour you can see behind this writing.

Apart from the map, we've got the Grunty Fen Traders bookmark, the Collapsed Chapel postcard and a whole host of greetings cards - including a limited supply of cards SIGNED by Dennis and Mr South.

Also, to complete your Dennis collection, there's a limited supply of 7-inch vinyl singles of Ladder to the Moon b/w Birdsong.

Perfect gifts for the Fenatic.
