Best of Dennis Volume 1

We all know about the pleasant hopfields of Kent, the lavender fields of Norfolk, even the liquorice fields of Pontefract. But who sings of the rhubarb plots of Grunty Fen? Who but Dennis?

We know too of the bonny Highlanders of Scotland, the splendid singers of Wales, even the canny Dalesman of Yorkshire. But who sings the praises of the Fenfolk? Who but Dennis? This extraordinary man has emerged from the obscurity of the converted railway carriage where he lives with his 92-year-old granny surrounded by ramshackle sheds, thorn thickets and black mud, to dominate the flat landscape.
Certainly, he now dominates my life. Wherever I go, listeners seldom ask about the great statesmen, princes and stars I meet during my duties for the BBC. Indeed, almost all anyone ever says to me these days is: "When are you going to repeat some of the best stories Dennis has told you?". Times without number listeners demand to hear again how Dennis went to get his haircut in Cambridge, how he builds privies, how he had a bath, how he went to Cromer and a score more fondly remembered episodes. So I have done my best to please everyone with this selection of highlights from our encounters in 1988. There are six extra songs too.
